I'm not sure what Oprah is hoping for, but as someone who daily teaches the products of America's education system (and sometimes International system as well) I know that something is wrong somewhere. Too many of my students simply don't know how to read and write. Therefore, for today, here are my hopes for the future of America's students.
1. Turn the television off for an hour and read a book.
2. Take some time to write---create a personal journal.
3. Learn to do Arithmetic, and then when you have mastered that,
4. Learn higher level Mathematics.
5. Realize that the key to your future is not professional sports---it is how well you can read, write and do Arithmetic. Practice these skills daily.
